ULTRASOUND SCANS

EXCELLENCE IN CARE DEFINES US

Thyroid Ultrasound Scan

An ultrasound scan of the thyroid is performed to check for any abnormalities such as cysts, nodules, tumours and any other signs of a thyroid disease.

If the thyroid function test is abnormal or if your doctor feels a growth in your thyroid gland during the examination of your neck, a thyroid ultrasound scan may be recommended. An ultrasound scan can determine if the thyroid gland is under or overactive in most cases.

Ultrasound scan results can also help your doctor to decide if you will need a biopsy of the thyroid lump.

Head and Neck Scan

Head and neck ultrasound scans are performed to identify any lumps in the head and neck regions and to examine the thyroid gland, salivary glands, and lymph nodes.

Commonly diagnosed conditions in the head and neck regions are lipoma, osteoma, lymphadenopathy, thyroid nodules, cysts, salivary gland inflammation and stones in the salivary duct, etc.

Cancerous changes in the head and neck regions are uncommon and ultrasound is an effective way to identify and differentiate such changes prior to further analysis through other studies.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to expose the area to be scanned.

There are no side effects from having an ultrasound examination. Unlike X-ray, CT scan and Fluoroscopy ultrasound scans do not have the risk of radiation exposure.

Ultrasound examination is not a painful procedure. It involves application of some cold gel on your skin to image your body parts through an ultrasound probe. Very occasionally pressure of the probe over your skin may cause some discomfort, however, your Consultant Sonographer will ensure to obtain your feedback continuously during the examination to avoid or minimise discomfort.

Usually, your results will be explained to you following your examination. We will also endeavour to post or email results to you on the same day.

A digital copy of your images can be obtained from the Consultant Sonographer at an additional cost of £25. Please kindly make the request prior or during your appointment for a digital copy of your images.

We can provide a copy of your results to your GP upon request.

There is no restriction for driving following an ultrasound scan

Yes of course you can. If you are bringing children to your appointment then please kindly ensure that they are supervised by an adult during the examination in the waiting room. This will avoid any distraction to the Consultant Sonographer during the examination.

Usually, you don’t need a follow-up. Occasionally, we may write to your GP to request them to follow-up certain findings if applicable. This will be explained to you at the time of your appointment. You can also organise a follow-up appointment with us for monitoring certain non-harmful findings. You will have an opportunity to discuss this in detail with your Consultant Sonographer during your appointment.
